This week we have been comparing the differences between traditional encyclopedias (paper) and World Book Web, which is available through Iowa AEA Online. Students worked in small groups to brain storm lists of characteristics and then we charted them using the Venn diagram interactive from ReadWriteThink. (What did they have in common? Facts. Experts. Words. Pictures. Maps.)

We have not purchased a multi-volume set of encyclopedias since 2002 and many of the students were only vaguely aware of what they were. They are used to searching by keyword and take multimedia supplementary material for granted. They did like the neat acetate page overlays for illustrating the article on the human body and the fold out maps.
