This week 3rd graders have been "speed dating" poetry books for National Poetry month. This means everyone gets to read from a book of poems for 60 seconds, decide if they want to keep and if they don't - pass it on. As a result, our poetry section (which is large) is getting pretty picked over. Prelutsky and Silverstein have been favorites, but I've seen some of our less popular (but wonderful) poetry books go out as well.
We've talked about types of poems and read quite a few out loud as well.
I have always loved poetry and this is a fun low-pressure activity that exposes students to a wide variety of verse.
