Four librarians from the Kirkwood Community College Library visited our media center on Friday to talk about the high school to college transition.

The library was humming with activity, filled with ninth grade language arts students putting the finishing touches on their persuasive essays. Their instructor, Mrs Nielsen joined us briefly to explain how her students use Google Apps to share their writing and receive feedback. One of her students explained her research process, how she evaluates sources and utilizes quality web sites suggested on the library web page.

We want our students to leave Solon with the information seeking, evaluation and analytical skills needed at the college level. This was a great first step in bringing that discussion to those that can make a difference. I will be contacting area high school teacher librarians to plan a meeting of the college and high school folks, but we made a commitment to do something concrete at Solon at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year and to then keep the momentum going.

I'd like to give a special shoutout to Jen Bishop, former media center associate at our SMS Media Center, and current reference librarian at Kirwood, for coordinating this initial meeting.
