Some years have more AV headaches challenges than others. 
Fortunately, this was the first service call needed for projector troubleshooting for 2011-12. I was prepared to be on hold indefinitely (coffee on hand, laptop for working while listening to Musak) and to get bad news, but the response was fairly quick and a replacement lamp is on the way at no charge to the school. 
I was pleasantly surprised.
