Last year, Science instructor, Dawn Posekany and I collaborated on a Community Read project with her Anatomy and Physiology class. Students read and researched THE LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS by Rebecca Skloot and then led a discussion about the book with community members. It was highly engaging and a great way to involve Solon citizens in the intellectual lives of our students.
This year, our read is THE PANIC VIRUS by Seth Mnookin, copies of which were purchased with a grant from the Solon Education Foundation. The Solon Public Library partnered with the high school by selecting the title for its February discussion and many of the members plan to join us for our April 4th event. Students received their copies and assignment guidelines shorty before spring break and have been reading and preparing since then.
Yesterday, the students identified four major themes, broke into groups and began writing questions for the discussion. Today, they selected questions and began doing background research.
Tomorrow we have the incredible opportunity to ask the author questions via Skype. This will certainly add a deeper dimension to the experience. I can't wait to hear the dialog.
